How to Register to Vote

There are four ways to register to vote in New Hampshire. Each requires proof of identity, age, citizenship, and where you live. If you do NOT have documentation proving one or more of these things, you may sign an official form (affidavit).

Register to vote at the town (or city) clerk’s office up to 6-13 days before any election

  • The town clerk’s office is at 756 Dalton Road, Dalton, NH 03598.
  • The town clerk’s office hours are Tuesday 1pm to 6pm and Thursday 7am to 1pm, unless otherwise posted on our HOME page.

Register to vote with your local Supervisors of the Checklist

  • Supervisors of the Checklist are required to meet at designated times to accept registrations and changes in party affiliation.
  • These times are posted in the town office on the door and on the bulletin board.
  • The Supervisor of the Checklist Session will be held on a Saturday at 11 am, October 29th. 

Register to vote on the day of any election, at the polling place

  • This will take extra time. Look for the voter registration table.

Register absentee, by mail

  • If you are unable to register in person because of physical disability (including serious illness or fear of contracting serious illness), religious beliefs, military service, or because of temporary absence, you may register by mail.
  • Request an absentee voter registration packet from your town or city clerk.
  • The absentee voter registration form must be witnessed by another person. Both forms are to be returned to your town or city clerk.

Voting By Absentee Ballot (Restricted)

  • Absentee Ballot Application Link <https://www.sos.nh.gov/elections/voters/absentee-ballots/request-absentee-ballot>
  • An application for an absentee ballot may be returned in person or by mail, fax, or email to your town or city clerk, provided there is an actual (NOT electronic) signature.
  • The reasons for requesting an absentee ballot include; being absent from the voter’s city or town, a religious observance, disability or illness, and employment commitments (including caregiving) during the entire time the polls are open. Absentee ballots may also be available when a weather emergency impacts an election.
  • Absentee ballots are available from your town or city clerk approximately 30 days before an election.  Request the absentee ballot application from the clerk or download the application online. If you wish, you may submit a request in writing that should include all the information required on the application: your name, voting address, mailing address and your signature.

How to Complete Your Ballot

Your absentee ballot will come with two envelopes: an affidavit envelope and a return envelope. Please carefully read and follow those instructions to complete your ballot.

  • Completing the Ballot
    Vote for no more than the number specified for each race. For example, you can only vote for one person for Governor and should only fill in the oval for the candidate you want to vote for on the ballot or as a write-in. If you fill in more than one oval for Governor, your vote will not count.
  • Affidavit Envelope
    Once you complete your ballot, place it in the Affidavit Envelope and seal it. Please sign one of the two affidavits on that envelope that best suits your situation. If you have a disability and received assistance in completing your ballot, please have your assistant sign the Affidavit Envelope as well. If your signature is missing, the ballot will be challenged, which means it does not get counted. Voters whose ballots are challenged are notified shortly after the election.
  • Return Envelope
    After you place your ballot in the Affidavit Envelope, sign the envelope and seal it, place the Affidavit Envelope inside the Return Envelope. If you have any documents which need to be returned, such as voter registration material, please place those in the Return Envelope as well (not in the Affidavit Envelope). Seal your Return Envelope and if mailing, affix postage (two stamps).

Returning Absentee Ballots

Absentee ballots can only be returned by mail, in-person by the voter, or by a delivery agent (with signed document). 

Mail: Please mail to Town Clerk’s Office, 756 Dalton Road, Dalton, NH 03598.

In-Person: You may return your completed ballot to the Town Clerk’s Office on Tuesday from 1pm to 6pm and Thursday from 7am to 1pm. When you return your ballot, we will ask for your photo identification (see NH RSA 657:17-a). If you are a delivery agent, you will be asked to complete a return form.

Delivery Agent: The following people are considered to be a delivery agent, per NH RSA 657:17:

  • The voter’s spouse, parent, sibling, child, grandchild, father-in-law, mother-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, stepparent or stepchild;
  • Nursing home administrator licensed pursuant to RSA 151-A:2, or a nursing home staff member designated in writing by the administrator to deliver ballots;
  • The residential care facility administrator, or residential care facility staff member designated in writing by the administrator to deliver ballots;
  • The person* assisting a blind voter a voter with a disability who has signed a statement on the affidavit envelope acknowledging assistance. *This person cannot deliver more than 4 absentee ballots.

Your delivery agent will be asked to complete a return form and show photo identification in order to deliver your ballot.

Day before Election Day: Absentee ballots will be accepted by mail, in-person by the voter, or by a delivery agent through 5 p.m. on the day before Election Day.

Election Day: Absentee ballots will be accepted by mail or delivery agent until 5 p.m. on Election Day at the Town Clerk’s Office.

Declaration of Candidacy forms can be completed at the Town Clerk’s office between January 25, 2023 and February 3, 2023, during regular public business hours.  The Town Clerk will be open from 3-5pm on Friday, February 3, 2023 at which time final Declarations will be accepted in person.

  • Library Trustee – 1 opening for 3 year term
  • Trustee of Trust Funds – 1 opening for a 3 year term
  • Supervisor of the Checklist – 1 opening for 1 year to complete open term
